IRC is a text-based chat client used mostly by Computing Team to talk with either Alumni or specialised groups in different areas of computing (e.g. A bitcoin git tracker on IRC).
Overview
Unlike other chat clients, IRC doesn't technically have a "history" (making it kind of opposite to things like mailing lists e.g. the Linux Kernel's mailing list) - when you connect to a server you will only get the messages sent while that connection is active.
